What you'll see
You receive a failed-order email from Stream that says:
Failure Reason: There was an issue with the POS not accepting the order.
Additional Details: FAILED_CREATE_ORDER: Missing Alternative Payment Type in Toast POS
The order was not accepted by Toast.
What it means
Stream sends each delivery app's orders into Toast tagged with an Other payment option (Toast also calls it an alternative payment type), so Toast can attribute the order. Stream finds that option in your Toast account by its name. If it cannot find an option with the name it expects, Toast cannot accept the order.
Stream also looks for this option on orders where no payment is sent, for example when the customer pays at pickup.
The most common reasons are:
There is no option for that delivery app in your Toast account.
The option was deleted or renamed. Removing one of these options causes this error for orders from that delivery app.
The name does not match what Stream expects. This includes a space that looks normal but is a different character, which can happen when a name is pasted from another document.
The option was created but not published in Toast.
Good to know: You do not need to register anything in Stream. Stream reads your list of payment options from Toast for each order, so a correctly named and published option is picked up by the next order. Capital letters do not matter in the name.
How to fix it
In Toast Web, click Finance. Under RELATED, expand Settings and click Other payment options.
Look for one option for each delivery app you receive orders from. Our setup guide uses names in the form
STREAM x UBERandSTREAM x DOORDASH. A name used for Deliveroo isSTREAM x DELIVEROO.If the option for the delivery app in your alert is missing, create it by following Step 5 - Create Payment Options in Toast. Select Save, then Publish Now.
If the option exists but the error continues, check that it is published. Then delete its name and type it again by hand with the normal space bar. Do not paste it from a document, email or chat. Select Save, then Publish Now.
Do not delete or rename these options while you still receive orders from that delivery app.
Wait for the next order, or place a test order, to confirm that it comes through.
If the email says instead that a setting Stream uses to send the order to your POS can no longer be found, see the POS CONFIGURATION ERROR row in Understanding Order Errors.
Still seeing the error? Contact Stream Support at [email protected] with your Stream location name, the delivery app, the order ID, the date and time of the failed order, and a screenshot of your Other payment options list in Toast. If you are not sure what to name the option for a delivery app, tell us which one and we will give you the exact name.
