This guide walks through reviewing and adding Dining Options in Toast — the labels (Dine In, Take Out, DSP-specific pickup/delivery, etc.) that describe how each order is being served.

Before you get into the steps below, here's what Stream looks for in Toast for each type of order you accept. Toast matches on behavior, not on name — the behavior is what determines whether an order succeeds, not what you call the option.

From the Toast admin home screen, click Kitchen in the left sidebar.

This opens the Kitchen settings page. Under the Dining options section, click Dining options

This opens the Dining Options page, listing every dining option currently configured — by default: Dine In, Take Out, Curbside, and Delivery — along with columns for:

Click + Add. This inserts a new blank row with an empty Name field and Behavior defaulted to None.

Type a clear, descriptive name. This demo added one dining option per DSP and fulfillment type — "GrubHub - Pickup," "GrubHub - Delivery," "DoorDash - Pickup," "DoorDash - Delivery," and "Uber - Pickup" — repeating Step 3 for each.

Click the Behavior dropdown for a row. The available options are:

In this demo, each "...- Pickup" option was set to Takeout, and each "...- Delivery" option was set to Delivery — this is what determines how the order behaves in the kitchen and reporting, independent of its display name.

Drive-thru and curbside orders: Toast lists a Drive-thru behavior in this dropdown, but Stream doesn't match on it. For drive-thru and curbside orders, use an option with the Curbside behavior instead.

Behavior is what matters — names are optional. Toast's default Take Out, Curbside, Delivery, and Dine In options already have the right behavior, so you don't need to create or rename anything to get started; just don't delete them or change their behavior. Per-DSP options (like "DoorDash - Pickup" in this demo) are only needed if you want orders from one delivery app routed to their own option — if you create one, its name must include the delivery app's name as a separate word ("DoorDash", not "Door Dash"), and it still needs the correct behavior from the table above.

Delivery: make sure you have an option with the Delivery behavior. If Stream can't find one, delivery orders fall back to a Takeout option and reach Toast without their delivery details.

Kiosk: kiosk orders need a Dine In option with "Kiosk" somewhere in the name.

Click Save (top right). Toast confirms with a green "Dining Option saved successfully. Publish Now." banner. Click Publish Now to push the configuration live.

Publish Now is required — a saved-but-unpublished dining option won't be used to match orders. Once you publish, the next order picks it up automatically; there's nothing else to reconnect or resync in Stream.

If you create a dining option in Toast during setup, click Refresh from POS in the dining-options picker in Stream to see it immediately. Your unsaved selections are kept.

If an order fails with an error like "No Toast dining option is configured for fulfillment type '<type>'", Toast doesn't have a dining option with the matching behavior yet. Add one based on the order type named in the error:

Once published, the new dining options are available to assign to orders, menus, and reporting.
