Deliveroo Error: "Duplicate items across mealtimes are not allowed"

Why your menu publish to Deliveroo fails with "duplicate items across mealtimes are not allowed," and how to fix it with category hours.

Written by Gildas Burnel

What you'll see

When you publish to Deliveroo, the menu status shows DSP_REJECTED with a message like this:

DSP_REJECTED: Deliveroo rejected the menu ... duplicate items across mealtimes are not allowed (en: Nutella Shake).

Nothing new goes live on Deliveroo until this is fixed.

Why it happens

Deliveroo shows a menu in "mealtimes" (time slots). Stream sends each of your menus to Deliveroo as a mealtime, and category hours (see below) as additional mealtimes.

Deliveroo does not allow the same item to be sold in more than one mealtime. If you have more than one menu with different hours (for example a Breakfast menu and a Dinner menu) and the same item exists in both, Deliveroo rejects the whole menu. This includes items that are separate copies with the same name.

Deliveroo only names one item per attempt, so after you fix the item named, a different one may be named next.

How to fix it

Choose one of these two options.

Option 1: Keep your multiple menus and remove the duplicates

  1. Find the item named in the error, and check which of your menus contain it.

  2. Decide which menu should keep the item, then remove it from the other menu(s) so that each item appears in only one menu. Deleting a separate copy with the same name counts as removing it.

  3. Repeat for every duplicated item. Deliveroo names one item at a time, so check the other menus for any other items that appear in more than one menu.

  4. Publish to Deliveroo again.

Note: an item removed from a menu will not be orderable on Deliveroo during that menu's hours.

Option 2: Use one menu with category hours

  1. Merge your menus into a single menu, so that each item exists only once. Delete the extra copies.

  2. Set the menu's hours so that they cover every time you are open. Category hours cannot extend beyond the menu's hours.

  3. For categories that should only show at certain times, set category hours: go to your menu, find the category, click the pencil icon next to the category name, select Edit category hours, set the hours and save. "Hours set" is displayed next to the category. For more detail, see Setting & Editing Menu Hours.

  4. Publish to Deliveroo again.

  5. If Deliveroo names another item, remove the duplicate and publish again.

Good to know

If you use category hours (Option 2):

  • Category hours are published to Deliveroo as mealtimes.

  • Deliveroo allows up to 7 mealtimes per location. If your category hours would need more, Stream sends your menu hours instead, so categories are not limited to their own hours.

  • Items that should show all day belong in a category without hours.
